The Internet is at its prime. Millions surf the web daily at
a substantial speed. As so, it is a norm, especially for teenagers, to engage
in such a tool so frequently. The reasons to why teenagers can’t survive
without the Internet leads to the Internet’s role as an information highway,
social interaction media, and escapism.
Firstly,
teenagers can’t survive without Internet because they depend on information the
Internet feeds them, for academics and for personal agendas. Young adults,
especially at secondary and tertiary level of education, require details and
sources in completing their school projects. In addition, they too count on the
Internet to search media such as songs and videos to fill the void in their
free time. For example, students frequent ‘Wikipedia.com’ for its massive
information database and ‘Youtube.com’ for the latest and trending videos.
Thus, teenagers require the Internet to stay awake for their daily dose of
reality relief.
Next, teenagers
are at the most, extrovert people, thus rely on the Internet for social
communication, apart from finding information. Teenagers constantly need to
engage in conversation due to their active nature. Therefore, they thrive on
sites and tools that allow them talk and chat with other users on the net.
Without the Internet, teenagers would have to spend more money on sms’es and
talk-times on their phones over long distance communications. As a clue,
teenagers are mostly using Facebook as their communication means between
friends and families.
Finally,
the Internet becomes a form of escapism for teenagers, which spells trouble if
teenagers are left without the Internet. As their assignments and boredom increases,
teenagers start to seek activities to ‘escape’ from the real world. This for
example can just be either playing games or reading novels, e-books to be
exact. Moreover, teenagers could become frustrated if they can’t release their
tension or boredom if the Internet were ever to cease to exist.
